Charlotte's Original Streetcar Bungalow Suburb — Steps From South End

Wilmore sits just southwest of Uptown Charlotte, wedged between South End and West Boulevard — one of the city's oldest streetcar suburbs and, these days, one of its most walkable. Built starting in 1914 on 335 acres of former farmland, Wilmore grew up alongside Dilworth as a trolley suburb of tree-lined streets filled with Craftsman bungalows and cottages, and Charlotte designated it a Local Historic District in 2010.

Today Wilmore blends century-old bungalow character with newer townhomes and infill construction, all a short walk from South End's breweries, restaurants, and the LYNX Blue Line. Home prices typically range from the high $400,000s for a smaller original bungalow to well over $1 million for a fully renovated or new-construction home on one of Wilmore's larger historic lots.

History & Character

Wilmore began in the 19th century as a small settlement called Blandville, home to two of Charlotte's early gold mines. In 1914, developer F.C. Abbott bought 335 acres of farmland from Mr. Wilson and Mr. Moore and combined their names to create "Wil-More." The neighborhood grew up as a streetcar suburb alongside Dilworth, connected to Uptown by the electric trolley line, and filled in with Craftsman bungalows and cottages during a building boom in the 1920s and '30s. Wilmore Elementary School opened in 1925 and served the neighborhood until 1978; the historic school building still stands on West Boulevard and was granted local historic landmark status. Charlotte designated Wilmore a Local Historic District in 2010, protecting its bungalow-lined streets even as South End's growth presses in from the east.

Schools & Lifestyle

Wilmore falls within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) district. Homes in the neighborhood are commonly zoned for:

Dilworth Elementary consolidated onto a single new campus on Park Road for the 2026-27 school year, replacing the former split Sedgefield/Latta campus arrangement — school zoning can shift, so always confirm current assignment for a specific address through the CMS school locator before making a decision based on schools.

Getting around: Wilmore is one of Charlotte's most walkable neighborhoods, bordering South End's brewery and restaurant district and sitting directly on the Charlotte Rail Trail, with easy access to the LYNX Blue Line and a quick trip into Uptown.

Buying in Wilmore

Wilmore rewards buyers who move decisively — its mix of century-old bungalows and newer infill construction means inventory varies block by block, and well-priced homes near South End or the Rail Trail routinely draw multiple offers. Because so many homes here are original 1920s and '30s bungalows, buyers benefit from an agent who can tell the difference between a lovingly renovated original and a home that needs significant work, along with how the neighborhood's historic-district guidelines affect what can and can't be changed.

We've helped buyers move both into and out of Wilmore — including a young couple who spent nearly two years waiting for the right opportunity in Dilworth before we found them an off-market home, sequenced against the sale of their Wilmore bungalow. Read that story →

Selling in Wilmore

Wilmore buyers respond to homes that lean into the neighborhood's bungalow character — original details, thoughtfully updated kitchens and baths, and outdoor space that takes advantage of the walk to South End. Because the neighborhood sits inside a Local Historic District, sellers with original architectural detail intact often have a real edge, and accurate pricing matters given how much comparable sales can vary between an untouched original and a fully renovated home on the same block.

When we sold our clients' 1928 Wilmore bungalow on Southwood Avenue, strategic pricing created competition among buyers and the home closed $35,000 over asking — proceeds that helped fund their next purchase in Dilworth. Read that story →
